How to Plan for your Cozumel Trip

You are going to Cozumel Island Mexico to relax and have the time of your life, but sometimes the smallest things like no sink stopper or a toe cut on a sharp piece of coral can spoil a day in paradise. Planning ahead for your Cozumel Mexico vacation can prevent minor inconveniences or major catastrophes, plus save money and leave you more time to simply chill on the Cozumel island's spectacular beaches or cool off in those azure Caribbean waters of Isla Cozumel.

Paperwork to bring and exclude when traveling to Cozumel

Step 1

Make three copies of all important travel papers--passport, hotel and rental car reservations. Pack one in your carry-on bag or purse, leave one with a trusted friend or family member and put the third in your luggage.

Step 2

Register your Cozumel trip information online with the US Department of State's online emergency contact service, travel.state.gov, especially if you are traveling during hurricane season--June through November.

Step 3

Write a list of your credit and debit card numbers and the customer service overseas telephone numbers, email the list to yourself, or keep a print-out separate from your wallet--plan on storing it in your Cozumel hotel safe during your trip along with copies of your travel documents.

Step 4

Clean out your wallet and take along only the credit cards you will use, leaving gas and department store cards at home. Leave behind voter or employee identification, or any card or document you will not need that may be a hassle to replace.

Packing

Step 1

Lay out the clothes you would like to take and then be selective, keeping in mind that Cozumel Island is a laid-back place with few dress codes and most Cozumel hotels have overnight laundry service. Chances are you will buy a T-shirt, Cozumel resort clothes or sandals at one of the Cozumel's many shops. Take a sweater or light jacket in the winter, a small, pocket-sized raincoat in the summer. No ties or pantyhose are needed.

Step 2

Make reservations online at PromosCozumel.com to save time, money and any hassle from over priced Cozumel excursions and Cozumel tours from cruise lines and tour salesman. It may not save money to take your own snorkel equipment, since our Snorkel Tours provide them, but you can check-out our Self-Guided Snorkel Guide to learn how you can take your own Snorkeling Tours from Cozumel's Gorgeous beaches and save money. Pack sea shoes--Cozumel's coral reefs are beautiful but dangerous to exposed toes--and take an old, lightweight T-shirt to protect shoulders from dive equipment.

Step 3

Assemble an emergency kit when traveling to Cozumel Mexico and include a small roll of duct tape, a sink stopper, hand sanitizer, toilet seat covers, mosquito repellent, a couple of scented fabric softener sheets (handy to freshen a musty hotel bathroom), batteries and a small first-aid kit. These items may be available in Cozumel, and if you go to the right places are actually cheaper that the States. Semi-Pharmacy has very low prices as well as Cozumel's Chedraui Food Store, which is similar to a Walmart with better prices.

Step 4

Pack zippered plastic bags (handy for wet swimsuits after that last swim before the flight home); a small, crushable cooler, a canvas bag for Cozumel beach; and an extra duffel bag and a couple of sheets of bubble wrap for those inevitable Mexican handmade Cozumel souvenirs.

What to take when vacationing in Cozumel Mexico?

Medications

When traveling to Cozumel Island Mexico, pack any prescription and over-the-counter medications in their original, labeled packages to avoid confiscation at the border or airport. Mexico is infamous for its water quality; in case of accidental ingestion, be sure to pack an anti-diarrhea medicine like Imodium to slow diarrhea enough to allow you to make it through a flight or bus ride from Cozumel. For safety, pack a small bottle of iodine tablets and use them to purify water that you think might be suspect. Buy short-term travel insurance if your health coverage does not extend to international travel, and remember to pack your insurance card.

Clothing

Tourists traveling to Cozumel Mexico should dress appropriately for the warm sensational sun that’s keeps Cozumel at a magnificent comfortable temperature all year round. In popular tourist areas like Cancun, Cozumel and Playa del Carmen, it is usually acceptable to wear traditional swim wear and more revealing clothing. In other parts of the country, particularly rural areas, dress tends to be more modest and less revealing. Evenings in Cozumel Mexico are usually very comfortable but there are times during the winter where you need to bring a light jacket or sweater, so its recommended to always bring one just in case. If you plan to visit the mountains of Mexico, bring warmer clothes to combat the lower temperatures at high altitudes. But if you plan on visiting Cozumel Mexico or any other warm region within Mexico, you won’t have to worry about that.

Books & Guides

In much of Cozumel Mexico, it is difficult to find English-language books, magazines, or guides. Make sure to bring your own from home. For practical Cozumel travel information and suggestions, Promos Cozumel has the largest selection of Cozumel Informational Guided and Cozumel Articles to help you learn and prepare for Cozumel Mexico. We will help prepare you for transportation, hotel options, tours, excursions, expeditions, attractions, activities, events, and getting Cozumel visitors to and around Isla Cozumel.

Safety Items

In many Cozumel tourist areas of Cozumel Mexico, petty crime is almost non-existent. If you do travel outside of Cozumel Island to a dangerous area, bring a money belt, which may be worn under your clothing which may carry passports, cash and credit cards.  Money belts are mostly useful on long-distance, overnight buses. If staying in a hostel outside of Cozumel Island Mexico, bring a padlock to secure your possessions in a locker. If you stay in Isla Cozumel Mexico, crime is almost non-existent so don't worry too much about taking to many precautions when visiting in Cozumel Mexico.

Footwear

One of the most useful things you can bring to Cozumel Mexico is a pair of inexpensive flip-flops. They can be used as shower shoes, on the Cozumel beach, on quick trips to the bathroom at night and for countless other times when you'd rather not expose your feet to questionable carpets or tiles. Unless you plan to visit many upscale resorts or restaurants in Cozumel, leave the fancy high heels or loafers at home. A nice pair of sandals will usually suffice for dinners and with dresses. Make sure to bring comfortable running shoes for Cozumel tours, Cozumel Excursions, Cozumel Hiking Expeditions or exploring the island and visiting Cozumel's Mayan ruins.

Electronics

Cozumel Mexico uses the same outlet style and power voltage as the United States. If you plan to bring a laptop, cell phone or camera charger, bring a small surge protector to guard against sudden power spikes. This isn’t as important traveling to Cozumel Island, but rural areas off the island that have unstable power supplies. In older Cozumel hotels, you may incur trouble finding an outlet with power surges, or three-prong outlets. Make sure to bring small adaptors, available for purchase at most hardware stores that allow you to plug in your three-prong devices.

Necessities

Travelers to Cozumel Mexico should pack basic items like sunscreen, shampoo and other toiletries. While these items are readily available in popular Cozumel tourist destinations, you may have difficulty finding a quality replacement if you travel off Cozumel Mexico, in more rural areas. Bring an umbrella or poncho for travel in the rainy season, and consider packing a small clothesline to dry swimsuits and other damp items in the humid Tropical Cozumel weather.
